Is This a Karate Class?
No. Kuk Sool Won is the name of the art. A system that builds on each level achieved, it is a Korean martial arts system that consists of traditional forms, self-defense techniques, falling techniques, and weapons in addition to kicking and punching and a myriad of other skills forming a comprehensive system.
I am interested in weapons training. Does Kuk Sool Won™ offer weapons training?
Yes, Kuk Sool Won has 24 different weapons that are taught at various levels of training.
I am in my 40's and not very athletic. I have an old injury that boothers me from time to time. I am worried that Kuk Sool Won™ training might be too much for me.
We work around injuries and can tailor your training to fit what you can physically do.
What should I call my instructor?
Usually the instructor’s rank works just fine and if all else fails Sir or Ma’am. In class, we refer to all students by their rank, last name or as sir or ma’am, regardless of age or rank. We believe this instills respect among the students.
What are those really fancy uniforms?
The Kuk Sool Won dress uniform is only worn by black belts students and is patterned after the clothing that the Korean generals wore under their battle armor. This uniform is our formal uniform that we wear on special occasions.
What are the different ranks in Kuk Sool Won™?
Our under black belt ranks and corresponding belts are as follows:
Hin Di – White belt
No Rang Di – Yellow belt
Chung Di – Blue belt
Hyung Di – Red belt
Jah Di – Brown belt
Dahn Bo Nim – Black Brown belt
I previously studied a different art. Can I keep my same rank?
While we recognize the work and dedication it takes to reach certain belt levels in another martial arts system, all students begin as a white belt, regardless of a rank achieved in another martial art.
Kuk Sool Won™ is new to me. What makes Kuk Sool Won™ different from other martial arts?
Kuk Sool Won™ is a well balanced martial art using kicking, punching, forms, joint locks, throws, and weapons.
Do I need to wear a uniform?
When is a good age to start? Also, I would like a family activity, but since I am older and my child is 6, will I be held back if we train at the same time?
We take students as young as 5 and there is no age restriction on the age of an adult who wants to begin training. The student must be able to physically perform activities in class. We encourage families to train together in martial arts; nevertheless adults and children learn differently, as such they have separate classes. Adults and children, learn the same material, the class curriculum for children extends over several belts because of the advanced material they learn. Parents will not be held back and they may know more material than their child although they may be the same belt rank.
What's the reason for all the bowing?
Bowing in class does not have any religious meaning. It has a social meaning in the Asian culture and is a sign of respect. The gesture is very similar to shaking hands in western culture.
How long will it take for me to get a black belt? How does all that work?
It usually takes 3.5 to 4 years to achieve the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt. Each student begins at the rank of white belt and tests quarterly. When they receive the rank of Dahn Bo Nim (black brown belt), the Chief Instructor will make a recommendation to the Grandmaster that the student is ready to begin their Black Belt testing. The student will pay for their testing fee and they must test twice in front of the Grandmaster before the Chief Instructor recommends that the student is ready to be promoted to Black Belt.
Why are your uniforms black instead of white?
Our uniform is black because in the Korean culture, black is considered to be pure.
I noticed that during your classes, people spend a lot of time "yelling". What is that all about?
The “yelling” is actual a martial arts yell called a “kiahp.” This sound is made to protect the student’s internal organs, etc., whenever a foot or hand technique is made.
How often is testing?
Testing is conducted on a quarterly basis.
We are dedicated to helping people improve their lives through the martial arts. Our students come from every walk of life and range from age 5 and up. Interested in learning more about Kuk Sool Won™ of Jacksonville?
